Abinee TEC 2019: Mercosur and European Union experts debate regulatory convergence

Experts in standardization and conformity assessment of European Union and Mercosur entities participated in São Paulo on July 25, the “Round Table – Regulatory Convergence”, held by Abinee with the support of Apex-Brasil, within Abinee TEC 2019.

During the event, the practices of the countries participating in the blocks regarding regulation, conformity assessment and market monitoring of electrical and electronic products were presented.

Presentations converged on the need to promote joint work between the private sector and public agencies as an essential factor in curbing the presence of non-compliant, pirated or low quality products in the market. In addition, countries are modernizing their systems to streamline processes and increase competitiveness, giving manufacturers and traders more responsibility.

According to Abinee President Humberto Barbato, the purpose of the meeting was “to facilitate international trade, broaden and deepen discussions between countries and regional blocks,” he said. He also stressed the importance of each country participating in international mechanisms for mutual recognition and conformity assessment, such as the international IEC scheme.

IEC Latin America Director Amaury Santos updated participants on the facilities that IEC systems offer to electrical and electronic products in different countries.
